In this exclusive interview, we speak with Maria Ruseva, a leading voice in the creative industry and the visionary designer behind the sustainable fashion label Moda de la Maria. With over 18 years of experience in fashion, Maria shares her journey of building a purpose-driven creative career rooted in craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless design.
Her story offers valuable insights and inspiration for creatives navigating the evolving world of fashion and looking to make a meaningful impact through their work.
From Istanbul to London: A Journey of Craftsmanship and Purpose
My journey in fashion began over 20 years ago, and it has been one of discovery, learning, and a deep commitment to craftsmanship. I spent 13 transformative years in Istanbul, immersing myself in the vibrant fashion scene. There, I witnessed the rise of disposable fashion and the growing disconnect between quality and mass production. This realisation sparked a strong passion to create something different—something rooted in craftsmanship, quality, and sustainability.
In 2013, I took the decisive step to move to London, where I brought my vision to life by founding Moda de la Maria.
My goal was simple yet profound: to offer high-quality, handmade womenswear that celebrates timeless elegance and honours the natural beauty of materials.
Each garment is designed and produced in-house, where we pour heart and soul into every stitch, embracing the values of slow fashion. With every collection, I strive to create pieces that endure through time, embodying sustainability, authenticity, and artistry at their core.
The Roots of Creativity: Family, Heritage, and Inspiration
The rich traditions of craftsmanship woven into my Moldovan heritage have been the heartbeat of my journey. Growing up, my Ukrainian grandfather, a master of handcraft, worked with ship skin, creating traditional shepherd hats and winter coats. His artistry and ability to transform natural materials into something timeless left an indelible mark on me.
My mother, with her incredible skill in stitching, would craft my childhood designs from old clothes, spinning wool, knitting, and breathing new life into forgotten fabrics. Watching her, I learned the power of transformation—not just of materials, but of stories. These deep roots in craftsmanship, combined with my desire to challenge the fast-paced nature of modern fashion, fueled my passion to create something meaningful.
“The rich traditions of craftsmanship woven into my Moldovan heritage have been the heartbeat of my journey… Watching [my mother], I learned the power of transformation—not just of materials, but of stories.”
My mother’s unwavering support and encouragement have always been a guiding light, urging me to pursue my dream. Together, they inspired me to build a brand that celebrates artistry, sustainability, and the stories behind each piece. I wanted to offer women clothing that doesn’t just look beautiful but carries the spirit of ethical creation, enduring craftsmanship, and a timeless connection to the past.
Traits That Shape a Creative Career
Resilience
Building a sustainable fashion brand in a world saturated by fast fashion demands unwavering dedication and perseverance. Every challenge that I faced has only strengthened my resolve. Staying true to my vision and values has been the guiding force, proving that integrity and passion can create something lasting, no matter the obstacles.
Attention to Details
Every thread tells a story. From the moment I touch the organic tweeds woven on the Isle of Mull, I feel a connection—to land, tradition, and craft. I don’t just look at fabric; I listen to it. Each stitch we make is intentional, and each seam is a quiet promise of quality. Our garments aren’t rushed—they’re built slowly, with reverence. That meticulous care is what gives our pieces soul.
Empathy
We don’t just design clothes—we listen to women. We hear their stories, understand their insecurities, and embrace their dreams. Behind every request lies a deeper need: to be seen, to be confident, to express their true selves. That’s what inspires us. We create with heart, with purpose, and with a quiet understanding that fashion can heal, empower, and reflect the essence of who someone is. Style and sustainability are just the beginning—the real work lies in the connection we build.
Lessons Learned: What I Wish I Knew Starting Out
If I could go back, I’d tell my younger self to embrace the power of community sooner. The real magic happens when you collaborate with local artisans and forge deep connections with your clients. These relationships have shaped and enriched the brand in ways I never imagined.
“If I could go back, I’d tell my younger self to embrace the power of community sooner… Surrounding yourself with like-minded people not only elevates your vision but also infuses your work with energy and authenticity.”
Surrounding yourself with like-minded people not only elevates your vision but also infuses your work with energy and authenticity that resonates with everyone involved. Building that network was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Inside the Studio: A Day in the Life of a Fashion Creative
Each day begins with a quiet yet purposeful moment of sourcing the finest natural fabrics—whether it’s organic wool tweeds, luxurious cashmere, or the smoothest silks and cotton. I immerse myself in the textures, colours, and stories each material tells. From there, I move into the design phase, sketching concepts that seamlessly blend timeless elegance with the modern woman’s needs.
At Moda de la Maria, the first design we create is born in our studio—hand-drawing sketches and meticulously hand-cutting patterns. If the project requires multiple productions, we then collaborate with skilled artisans to bring the designs to life.
Every piece is crafted with care, ensuring that our commitment to quality, sustainability, and craftsmanship shines through. It’s a process that’s both thoughtful and deliberate, and every day presents an opportunity to create something truly special.

Balancing Sustainability and Luxury in the Creative Industry
One of the most rewarding yet challenging aspects of my role is balancing sustainability with luxury. Sourcing materials that meet both the highest standards of quality and sustainability requires careful thought and commitment. To tackle this, we’ve built strong, trusting relationships with ethical suppliers who share our values.
“One of the most rewarding yet challenging aspects of my role is balancing sustainability with luxury… We’ve built strong, trusting relationships with ethical suppliers who share our values.”
We continually educate ourselves on the latest sustainable practices, ensuring that every decision we make aligns with our mission to create both luxurious and eco-conscious garments. It’s a challenge we embrace, knowing that every step we take brings us closer to our vision of a more responsible, yet elegant, future in fashion.
Signature Work: The Story Behind the Tweed Jacket
Designing our signature tweed jackets is undoubtedly one of the highlights of my career. These pieces are more than just garments—they are a true reflection of our brand’s soul.
We source organic tweed from the Isle of Mull, renowned for its rich heritage, and handcraft each jacket in our London studio. The result is a perfect blend of timeless elegance and sustainable luxury. Every stitch tells a story, and every detail embodies our commitment to craftsmanship and the environment. It’s a project that encapsulates everything we stand for, making it an incredibly rewarding experience to bring to life.

Staying Inspired in a Fast-Changing Fashion World
At Moda de la Maria, we believe in the beauty of timeless design, but we also understand the importance of staying connected to the evolving fashion landscape. To remain relevant, I immerse myself in fashion events, engage with communities championing sustainable practices, and constantly seek out new knowledge in both design and ethical practices.
My advice to others: embrace trends as inspiration, but never let them overshadow your brand’s true essence. Stay true to your core values, and let those timeless principles guide your evolution. Fashion should always reflect who you are, not just what’s on the runway.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Creatives
“Quality over quantity.” This timeless piece of advice has shaped the very foundation of our brand. In a world where speed and mass production often take precedence, we choose to focus on creating garments that are built to last—both in terms of craftsmanship and relevance.
“It’s a reminder that true luxury lies in the details, and that enduring quality is always worth the investment.”
This principle resonates deeply with me because it aligns perfectly with our values at Moda de la Maria: creating pieces that transcend fleeting trends and are cherished for years to come. It’s a reminder that true luxury lies in the details, and that enduring quality is always worth the investment.
Authenticity and Purpose: The Heart of a Creative Career
Stay rooted in your vision and values, no matter how challenging the journey may seem. The fashion industry can feel overwhelming, but true success lies in authenticity. Embrace your unique perspective and let your passion for craftsmanship and sustainability guide you.
“Stay rooted in your vision and values, no matter how challenging the journey may seem… Trust that your commitment to making a meaningful impact ”
When you create with purpose and integrity, your work will naturally resonate with those who share your beliefs. Trust that your commitment to making a meaningful impact will not only set you apart but will also attract a loyal community of like-minded individuals who appreciate the heart and soul you pour into every piece.
